What is Comfortis?
It is flavored chewable tablet that can be given once per month for flea control. It is a prescription product that can be purchased from your veterinarian.
Should I consider using Comfortis for my dog?
If your dog has a flea allergy, YES! – Comfortis starts to kill adult fleas within 30 minutes of giving the pill and all fleas on the pet should be dead within 4 hours. While some of the topical flea preventatives (Frontline Plus or Advantage) may take 12-18 hours for fleas to die after application. This means that the fleas have more time to feed on your pet which means more bites and more itchiness.
If you have had problems applying the Frontline Plus to your dog, YES you should consider Comfortis! – Many dogs with really thick fur can be hard to apply the liquid actually to the skin, so giving a flea medication by mouth avoids this dilemma. Many of you with small children may also be concerned about your children contacting the Frontline Plus and the Comfortis also avoids that concern.
If your pet gets bathed frequently, YES! – While Frontline Plus is very water resistant pets that are bathed with a medicated shampoo on a weekly basis may experience a decrease in the effectiveness of the Frontline Plus. Since the Comfortis works internally through the bloodstream bathing will not decrease efficacy.
Is there any reason that I would not want to use Comfortis?
If your dog has exposure to ticks – Comfortis does nothing to kill ticks so if your pet gets ticks on it occasionally, Comfortis would not be our first choice of flea prevention for your pet; we would recommend Frontline Plus since it kills ticks.
If your dog has an allergy to pork – The flavoring in the Comfortis tastes like beef but is made from a pork protein, so if your dog is allergic to pork, you would want to use something without a flavoring either Capstar (if flea treatment is only needed on occasion) or Frontline Plus if it is needed monthly.
