Vectra

Vectra is a topical, once-monthly parasite preventative. To use this medication, dogs must be 7 weeks of age and at least 2.5 pounds. Cats must be at least 8 weeks of age. Both products are available over the counter at our hospital without a prescription and remain effective after bathing and swimming.

Vectra 3D for Dogs:

Vectra 3D repels and kills adult fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, lice, mites, and sand fleas on contact so they do not have to bite your pet. Vectra 3D kills adult fleas very quickly, with the majority of fleas dying within 2-6 hours of application. It also prevents the development of all other flea stages (eggs, larvae and pupae). Due to the faster kill time, it is a good choice for flea allergic dogs.

Vectra for Cats:

Vectra for cats repels and kills fleas only. Like Vectra 3D, it affects all of the life stages of the flea and has a rapid kill time.

Other Important Information about Vectra 3D/Vectra:

In addition to the great parasite control offered by the Vectra products, the packaging is easy to open with a no spill applicator tip. The applicator tip is longer to help get the product through thick fur and onto the pet’s skin.

If there are both cats and dogs in the same household, please separate them and allow the canine Vectra 3D to dry fully (about 2 hours) before reintroducing the cats. The canine Vectra 3D has an ingredient called Permethrin that can be toxic to cats if ingested. There is no risk to cats if they lick the Vectra for cats off of themselves.

Vectra 3D/Vectra does not replace the need for heartworm prevention. Heartworm prevention must be used concurrently to effectively prevent infection.

Our doctors believe that parasite prevention is very important, as some of these parasites can be passed onto humans, especially children. Make sure to keep your pets on a monthly preventative. Our doctors and staff can help you make the decision on the best type of product for your individual pet.
