New Vaccine Protocol for Dogs and Cats
We have always strived to provide the best possible care for our
patients and clients. In the field of veterinary medicine, knowledge is
constantly changing and expanding.
In the past, as far back as the 1950’s, infectious disease experts and
vaccine manufacturers recommended annual vaccinations for every dog and cat
because little was known about many diseases and the vaccines were not as
effective as they are today. Recent research has indicated that some vaccines
are effective longer than one year, and vaccines are becoming more effective all
the time. Additionally, studies have suggested a link between some chronic
health diseases and vaccines in certain patients.
We must remember, however, that vaccines still play a very important
role in disease prevention. The only reason certain illnesses such as
Parvovirus, Canine Distemper, and Feline Distemper are now relatively uncommon
is because of vaccinations.
Today we try to take a
more intelligent approach to the use of vaccines. We want to consider factors
such as a pet’s exposure to the outdoors, presence of other animals in the
environment, age, current medical problems, and other circumstances to decide
for each pet individually which vaccines are most appropriate.
Therefore, our vaccine
protocol is changing. We will be considering a pet’s individual circumstances,
overall health, and risk of exposure to certain diseases when selecting the
appropriate vaccines and the appropriate vaccine schedule. We will work with
you, our client, on a more individual level to determine which vaccinations
your pet needs.
This protocol is based on
recommendations of the American Animal Hospital Association and American
Association of Feline Practitioners, two advisory panels with infectious
disease experts.
